PSEM Fellows were at the forefront at the joint 2010 Philippine Lipid and Atherosclerosis Society - Philippine Society of Hypertension annual convention held last February 10 to 12, 2010 at the Crowne Plaza Galleria. The more than 900 attendees appreciated the scientific program prepared by Dr. Dante Morales and our very own Dr. Elizabeth Paz Pacheco. No less than PSEM Vice President Dr. Leilani Mercado Asis opened the convention with first plenary lecture entitled “Faces and Phases in Atherosclerosis.” The theme was “Back to Basics” and Dr. Elizabeth Paz Pacheco succinctly reviewed “Diagnostics in Diabetes, Hypertension and Dyslipidemia” while the “Back to Basics” sessions in lipidology and diabetes were handled by PSEM stalwarts Dr. Cecilia Jimeno, Dr. Gabriel Jasul Jr., Dr. Nemencio Nicodemus Jr., Dr. Iris Thiele Isip Tan, Dr. Sjoberg Kho and Dr. Laura Acampado. The lecturers walked the audience through epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnostics and treatment.
Preliminary results of the National Nutrition and Health Survey (NNHes) 2008 were also presented at this convention with Dr. Leilani Mercado Asis summarizing the latest local statistics for diabetes mellitus. NNHeS 2003 papers on metabolic syndrome and adiponectin were presented by Dr. Dante Morales and Dr. Elizabeth Paz Pacheco respectively. Rounding off PSEM participation was Dr. Iris Thiele Isip Tan’s Medical Informatics symposium with lectures on smartphones and electronic medical records.
